National Medical Association Update on Haiti Crisis-"You Can Help" http://www.nmanet.org/index.php/HaitiRelief/donateform [EXCERPT OF MESSAGE FROM NMA PRESIDENT-DR. CEDRIC BRIGHT] Dear Colleagues, Thank you for the outpouring of support and your expressed desire to go to Haiti. The national office staff and I have just completed a conference call with the White House. They have indicated the need for precautions at this time. Because of the disruption in infrastructure, Haiti has very limited capacity to handle an influx of rescue and recovery workers on the ground. We are told that individuals and organizations should not attempt self-deployment (i.e., planning a mission to Haiti independent of the coordinated U.S. government response is not wise, at this time). There could be significant challenges landing on the island (there are no commercial flights), as well as challenges in dealing with conditions on the ground for which the emergency response teams are trained (housing, food, coordination with other medical/public health entities). [Click this link to read the full message text] We are making an effort to present you with our entire areas of focus for the critical pediatric issues as soon as possible. At this point we can provide you with information regarding our leadership, our strategic focus and our committee structure. The emphasis of our site is to provide you with the information you need to enhance your practice and to advocateon behalf of children and families. The NIH released its Evidence-Based Consensus Report on Lactose on February 25th, 2010 which can be viewed at http://consensus.nih.gov/2010/lactosestatement.htm We are looking forward to hearing from you. You can contact the Chair at e-mail address: myrtis@uic.edu. In brief, you should know the following about us: Our parent organization, the NMA, was established in 1895 and is the "Conscience of American Medicine". The NMA promotes the collective interests of physicians and patients of African descent. We carry out this mission by serving as the collective voice of physicians of African descent and as a leading force for parity in medicine, elimination of health disparities, and promotion of optimal health.
